A Student / Brewer Collaboration. $1/can will be donated.
The Chemical Engineering Department at SDSM&T has build a small brewery for educational purposes and is offering a lecture and lab for brewing. After the Fall lecture course, the students got to put the theory into practice for a lab, which entailed brewing smaller 5 gallon batches and participating in a 100 gallon scale-up. There were five groups that brewed small batches: a hefeweizen, an apricot pale ale, a blueberry blonde, an Irish red, and a chocolate stout.
On judgment day, Karl and Sam returned to their old grad school stomping grounds and paid a visit to the class. We tasted, discussed, and rated each beer. Our favorite was unanimous and confirmed to the other faculty judgers: first place goes to the hefeweizen team!
Following the publicity and extreme interest expressed by students, there was a minor administrative setback and the new 3 barrel brew house in the Chemical Engineering Unit Ops lab was shut down indefinitely.
Don’t worry though, Hay Camp to the rescue. In order to brew a beer that was ready before graduation, the class came over to Hay Camp and brewed the Hardrocker American Wheat Ale. It was a fun and educational day, and we’re happy to see such engaged and talented students at South Dakota School of Mines.
Join us May 3 for the beer release. We’ll be filling pints, 32 oz cans, and 64 oz growlers.
Also served on the Firkin with Rose Hips that day.
