This week, Linda Anderson and Darla Drew Lerdal present, "Black Hills Playhouse: Unusual Space, Unlikely Place."
The Black Hills Playhouse began as a dream of Dr. Warren M. (Doc) Lee of the University of South Dakota. He wanted to provide entertainment in a rural area while also helping students and theatre professionals. The original company worked in rustic conditions while drawing audiences to their unique offerings.
Presenters will discuss the Playhouse’s beginnings in 1934 and its changes over the years.
The Playhouse is one of the oldest continuously operated summer stock theaters in America. Each summer draws theatre professionals from across the country to experience a unique mix of performance and outdoor living.
They also have year-round education programs, summer camps, and programs for children and adults with disabilities. Their children’s theatre program, Dakota Players, worked with over 1,400 participants statewide in 2018.
Anderson is the executive director of the Black Hills Playhouse. She believes art is an essential component in dynamic, healthy communities and devotes time as a consultant, board member and volunteer.
Darla Drew Lerdal is the development operations manager of the Playhouse. She oversees the fundraising operations for the Rapid City Arts Council and creates all performance programs at the Dahl Arts Center that are sponsored by that council.
Admission for Turtle Soup is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and half-off for members. Call 394-6923 to reserve seats.
